Aging is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength - Betty Friedan

If we think of our life as a book, then the chapters in the book are what make up the entirety of our life, with each chapter being no more or no less important than the others. Every phase of our life, including late adulthood, is important and valuable and allows us an opportunity to evolve and become the best version of ourselves.

Oftentimes, the senior years are referred to as the golden years. When we are young, we may anticipate what our senior years will involve- traveling, more time to engage in hobbies, having more time to ourselves, being with the people we choose to be with, or financial success and stability. Anticipated transitions as we age include the prospect of retiring, downsizing, and/or finding a new purpose.

But what we envision as young people of what our golden years will be does not always actualize as we had hoped, and aging can bring with it stressors we did not anticipate. These stressors may include loss- loss of a family member, partner, friends, or our own independence. On the flip side, we may be the ones providing additional support for a loved one in need; for example, providing direct care to a partner or aging family member.

Whatever changes our senior years may bring, whether anticipated or unanticipated, the reality is there will be changes as with every life phase. Sometimes it is helpful to have a professional with whom to discuss these changes or to make decisions that can lead to an improved quality of life. And sometimes it is simply helpful to have an objective person with whom to talk, other than family or friends.
